How to make a Spirit Doll
Posted on Tuesday, March 16, 2004 (EST)
How to make a Spirit Doll
Supplies needed
White muslin, a spirit doll stamp and either
Fabrico black ink pad or Memories black ink
pad, polyester or cotton batting to stuff doll,
thread, needle, scissors, fabric paints, paint
brush, beads and charms, your imagination
  1. Take some of your muslin and wet it then spread it out on a piece of foil or plastic.

  2. Pick out a couple of colors of fabric paint; I usually go with blue, purple and green but choose your favorite colors. Stick your finger into the paint and smear the paint onto the wet fabric. Spray more water on the fabric if you have trouble spreading the paint or if it is too concentrated. This is the background for your doll so you don't want the colors to be too dark or you won't be able to see your stamped image.

  3. Spread your fabric and let it dry overnight. Heat set the paint into the fabric the next day when it is totally dry.

  4. Take your Random Art spirit doll stamp and ink it using either Fabrico or Memories ink. Stamp design onto fabric. Let dry thoroughly.

  5. Take another piece of painted fabric and put it under your stamped image.

  6. Thread your needle and sew around your doll on the outside lines. You can hand sew this or use your machine but the doll is small and hard to do on the machine.

  7. Now using your fabric paint and brush, paint a small line around the image of the doll, both front and back. Let this dry and then go back and trim the fabric around the doll to get rid of excess fabric. By painting the edges around the doll, you have stopped the fabric from raveling.

  8. Carefully cut a slit into the back of your doll, approximately 1 to 2 inches..

  9. Start stuffing the doll. If you are trying to stuff a small area such as feet or arms, it is best to use a very small piece of batting and stuff several times instead of one large piece. This keeps your stuffing even. Sew up the back of the doll.

  10. Now comes the imagination part. You can paint details onto your doll, you can
Bead her, add hair and/or quilt her.

  11. You can now add a pin back and wear your doll as a pin or you can add fibers to make her into a necklace. If you don't want to wear her, you can glue her to the front of a journal or incorporate her in a collage.

Let us know what novel ideas you use, send us a scan, we would love to have a gallery of inspiration. Just have fun!
